The Technology behind our trip reports
Some of you have asked how we create our web pages so here is a quick run down of the technology behind our writing.
First of all there is the trip itself. The material for our trip reports comes mostly from our memories but this is backed up by a detailed diary which is written on a Psion 5mx palmtop computer or occasionally on a Pico laptop computer. We also have any souvenirs and guide books that we collect along the way as well as a comprehensive photographic and video record of our trip.
The camera we use is a Cannon EOS 500 SLR body with a Tamron AF 28-200mm f4/5.6 zoom lens (fitted with a UV skylight filter). The film we use is Fujicolor Superia 400ASA colour print film. Our video camera is a Sony TRV94E Hi8 palmcorder and we occasionally use video stills that we capture from it in our trip reports. We have recently started to use our new 5Mpixel Minolta DiMAGE 7 digital camera but it hasnt yet replaced our trusty SLR as it turned out to be faulty. (Minolta have since repaired it but it is still faulty so its going back again!)
Once we get back home, our selected photographs are scanned in using a UMAX 2100U scanner. They are cropped to size and occasionally touched up using Adobe Photoshop 6. The web pages are then created and edited using SoftQuad's HoTMetaL Pro V5. All of these now run on a home built PC powered by an AMD Athlon 1700+ XP CPU on an ABIT KR7A motherboard fitted with 512MB of DDR2100 RAM and twin 40GB IBM Vancouver hard disks which are RAIDed together. This all runs under Microsofts Windows 98SE.
