Chris and Lina's Postcard from Mexico
Our Tour:
Kuoni LogoWe went on a 2-week, fully escorted tour of many of the major archaeological sites in Mexico. We went with the same company, Kuoni, that we toured China with and this tour was up to their usual, excellent standard. Once again, it was very well organised by our escorts who did just about everything for us again. There were two of them this time, as our group was larger, and one of them was the same escort we had on the China tour! However, unlike the China tour where we picked up a different local guide in each city, we were accompanied by just one guide in Mexico, who travelled with us. The tour would have been better, though, if the group had been split in two, each with its own local guide, as 33 people were just too many to gather around one person and it was sometimes hard to hear what he was saying (he also had an annoying habit of starting his narration before everyone had gathered around).

We know some of you liked the itinerary that we provided with our China trip report so we have done the same for this tour. Click here to see our itinerary. We have also provided the usual map with our route marked but this time it seemed appropriate to annotate some places with historical details and add some pictures.

Overall, this tour was less intensive than China but it was nonetheless fairly tiring as we still had to get up pretty early every day. We did have more time to ourselves this time though as there was no evening entertainment arranged for us and there were no group meals (which do tend to drag on). We also had the luxury of spending the final four days unwinding at the beach after the tour was over.

Traveller’s tip:
One problem we always have with these tours is that we tend to live out of our suitcases as it isn’t really worth unpacking only to have to pack again the next day. Well, we have found an ingenious solution to this problem: collapsible hanging wardrobe shelves! When we first spotted these in the Argos catalogue, we thought that they might come in useful to solve the recurrent problem we have with many hotels of having little or no drawer space but then we had the brain wave that we could actually pack our clothes inside these shelves and at each hotel on the tour we would simply hang up the shelves in the wardrobe and be instantly unpacked! This actually worked quite well during the Mexico tour - except at the first hotel on the tour where the wardrobe didn’t have a rail!
